Meet Jill Masset!
My love for Dawn Dolls began in the most glamorous penthouse a child could dream up: the top of our family television. While other kids played on the shag carpet, my dolls lived in a sky‑high apartment overlooking the family room—tiny fashion royalty perched above the nightly news like it was their own glittering skyline.
As their devoted (and slightly mischievous) designer, I took fashion matters into my own hands. If Dawn needed a new outfit, I simply “borrowed” my sister’s Barbie clothes and performed daring couture surgery with a pair of scissors. Barbie did not appreciate my artistic vision, and Dawn didn’t look that great in the oversized, snipped outfits.
So, one of my happiest childhood memories is of my mom taking me to AM&A’s department store in West Seneca, New York and letting me choose my own Dawn clone dolls. Dawn was off the shelves unfortunately; clone dolls were the only option. Diana and friends were not my favorites (compared to Dawn)…no real eyelashes, but at least the clothes were the right size. And they rounded out her gang. I did have one very special original: Topper Dawn’s Dance Party featuring Fancy Feet—lovingly purchased by my mom at Brand Names. That set felt like owning a piece of pure magic. I still have the stage and a small fashion box containing my real Dawn, the clones, their clothes and the plastic poodles.
That childhood love and spark has grown brighter over the last few years. Attending Dawn Doll conventions feels like returning to that magical world—only this time, it’s also filled with laughter, shared stories, and the most extraordinary people. The longtime attendees, who have been part of this community for years, welcomed me with warmth. Their kindness, generosity and open‑armed acceptance have turned these gatherings into cherished traditions.
The 2026 Dia de la Dawn Doll in sunny California will be my fourth convention. Looking forward to seeing everyone in October!!
