Things to Know

ABOUT DIA DE LOS MUERTOS Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) is a vibrant two-day Mexican holiday, primarily celebrated on November 1 and 2, honoring deceased loved ones with altars (ofrendas), marigolds, sugar skulls. According to National Geographic, it is a blend of ancient Aztec rituals and Catholic traditions. The celebration is not a time of mourning, but rather a joyous, colorful reunion and a way to embrace the natural cycle of life and death. When It Happens: Celebrated on November 1 (honoring children) and November 2 (honoring adults), often coinciding with All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day. Purpose: It is a celebration to welcome back the spirits of departed loved ones, not a somber, sad occasion. Origin: The tradition has roots in ancient Aztec, Toltec, and Nahua traditions, which viewed mourning as disrespectful. It was later blended with Spanish Catholic traditions. Ofrendas (Altars): Families create altars in their homes or on graves, decorated with photos, candles, flowers (marigolds), and favorite items/foods of the deceased. Symbols: * Marigolds: Known as cempasúchil, these bright orange flowers are believed to guide spirits to the altars. * Calacas and Calaveras: Skeletons and skulls (often edible) represent the departed and are depicted in cheerful, everyday activities to show that death is part of life. * Pan de Muerto: A sweet, traditional bread often decorated with bone-like shapes. UNESCO Recognition: In 2008, UNESCO added the indigenous festival to its list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Regional Differences: Traditions vary across Mexico; some communities hold vigils in cemeteries, while others have large, festive parades.
